Lake Arenal Southern Shore
The best riding near Lake Arenal happens along its southern shore. A good option is to catch a boat from Lake Arenal dam to the small town of Rio Chiquito (3o mins.) and then bike back to Fortuna. Along the way you ride on a dirt road that turns into doubletrack at times and get to cross several creeks including mighty Río Caño Negro before arriving at the hamlet of El Castillo. Once you are in El Castillo it is an easy ride on a gravel road along Arenal National Park to the paved road that connects the dam with Fortuna. Estimated ride time from Río Chiquito to the paved road is about 3 hours at a decent clip.
